CD recording: Gregorian Chant from Canterbury Cathedral
Incidentally, Canterbury Cathedral was the location for the CD recording of the Unfinished Vespers: Gregorian Chant The Martyrdom of Saint Thomas Becket
sung by the Schola Gregoriana of Cambridge directed by Mary Berry
– available from amazon.co.uk (follow the link for other recordings by Schola Gregoriana)
Alistair Warwick was assistant sound engineer for this CD recording and has vivid memories of a sprightly 70-something-year-young Mary Berry climbing up a vertical ladder in the cathedral tower as we recorded the bells.

Conducting
Alistair Warwick is Conductor of the Stirling University Choir.
He founded the Dunblane Chamber Orchestra in 2008, and conducted them in their first three concerts.
He has also conducted the Rosenethe Singers (December 2006, March 2008 and May 2010).
Alistair's passion is enabling people of all abilities to make music. As a teenage student at the Bexley Music School in Sidcup, he led a number of music ensembles, and was rewarded by a scholarship to study conducting with Bryan Fairfax to learn how to do it properly!
Later studies included work with Sebastian Forbes, Alasdair Mitchell, Owen Rees and Nicholas Conran, with whom he also studied Feldenkrais (using gentle movement and directed attention to improve movement).
Alistair has also participated in choral-direction masterclasses with Mike Brewer, Stephen Cleobury and David Hill.

Research
Masters dissertation on the Dunkeld Music Book
Alistair Warwick received a distinction for his Masters dissertation in Music at the University of Surrey on the Dunkeld Music Book (otherwise known as the Dowglas-Fischer or Lincluden Partbooks – GB-EdU MS 64).
In the Dunkeld Music Book is an anonymous motet for eight voices, Te Sanctum Dominum. As a result of his research Alistair Warwick has provisionally identified Nicholas Gombert as the composer of this work. A critical edition of the prima pars appears in the dissertation.
Other research
- work on Gregorian chant
- parody technique (especially in Victoria's Missa O magnum mysterium)
- the Wode Partbooks
- performance issues in Monteverdi's Vespers
- the use of inegalité (both in French Baroque and possible use in the music of JS Bach)
- attitudes to the Victorian Organ (especially relating to the 1893 William Hill organ at Arundel Cathedral)
- the identity and nature of music, and especially of sacred music
Writing
Alistair's published writing includes articles, contributions to other works, his MMus dissertation, references in other works, and reviews.

The title of this article immediately poses the question: why sing in Latin, when our services are in our own language? We are very familiar with the names of William Byrd and Thomas Tallis, perhaps also with those of Robert Parsons, Christopher Tye and John Shepherd. But what about those from England's neighbours? While the names of many English composers trip off the tongue, until recently it has been harder to name many composers writing music for the Scottish Church. More …

Mind the Gap
Choir & Organ (January/February 2007)
Interviewed by Maggie Hamilton, deputy editor of Choir and Organ, about gap-year study for organists and choral scholars. The Sacred Music Studies course from the University of Wales, Bangor and the Royal School of Church Music fills the gap nicely."…There have been some exciting and unexpected results already, with students looking at what they're doing in a new light and developing their practice. I certainly wish that when I was a cathedral director of music that this course had been available; if it had, I'd have approached it more confidently – and achieved much more."

Various choral pieces and psalm settings have been composed for use at Arundel Cathedral and elsewhere.
Some of these will be published by The Art of Music.
SATB arrangement and descant for Coe Fen
"How shall I sing that majesty".
This wonderful hymn was written for unison singing. Many people have looked for a choir version complete with descant, and one is now available.
This choral arrangement was made for, and first sung at, the RSCM 2006 Scottish Triennial Festival at St Michael's, Linlithgow on 4 November 2006.
It was featured in a choral-reading session with David Briggs, formerly of Gloucester Cathedral, at the 12th Annual East Carolina Religious Arts Festival held from January 24-26, 2008 and in the RSCM Australia Summer School in January 2011.
Over 1500 copies have been bought by choirs from all round the world.

What people say
- "…thank you for all you've done with the Choir at Arundel and for the Diocese over these past years – I am really very grateful."
Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor,
recently Archbishop of Westminster
- " 'Thank you' seems a terribly inadequate way to express our gratitude for your wonderful contribution to our wedding – you did so much with so many people / events, and a large number of people said to us how much they had enjoyed meeting you, working with you, and/or having you to stay!"
- "Great admiration for your work with the cast of assorted musicians [at St Barnabas' Church, Ottawa, Canada] …"
- "…thank you for the lovely music which contributed so much to the atmosphere and helped to make the service special. We really appreciated your contribution…"
- "the family were really thrilled with the music… Thanks for all your help/guidance as ever."
"Instrument king
The organ was played so delicately … at Arundel Cathedral … Alistair Warwick … took us on a short European tour of the king of instruments. Once again, the audience was privileged."

Biography – longer version (c.300 words)
Alistair Warwick has a passion for enabling people of all abilities to make music. As a teenager, he led a number of music ensembles, and was rewarded by a scholarship from the Bexley Music School to study conducting with Bryan Fairfax to learn how to do it properly! Later studies included work with Sebastian Forbes, Alasdair Mitchell, Owen Rees and Nicholas Conran, with whom he also studied Feldenkrais, and participation in choral-direction masterclasses with Mike Brewer, Stephen Cleobury and David Hill.
Theology and liturgy studies led to five years' pastoral work in South London, three years as Organist at Worth Abbey (as featured in the BBC TV series 'The Monastery'). Whilst at Worth, Bishop (now Cardinal) Cormac Murphy-O'Connor appointed him as Director of Music and Master of the Choristers at Arundel Cathedral, where he started the flourishing junior choir. During these ten years, he also worked closely with parishes in the diocese, helping them to be more confident and effective in their music-making.
Alistair has worked more than ten years with the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) in various fields of church music, including music engraving, publishing, educational development (including co-author of Voice for Life and Programme Director for Sacred Music Studies). He is currently Co-ordinator for Scotland, having returned here in 2002.
He has been Conductor of Stirling University Choir since 2009, and has been guest conductor with Rosenethe Singers several times. In 2008 he founded the Dunblane Chamber Orchestra, and conducted their first three concerts.
He has BMus and MMus degrees from Surrey University, specialising in conducting and 16th-century Scottish music, especially the music in the Dowglas-Fisher Partbooks.
As well as enabling music through teaching and performance, he has engraved thousands of pages of music for projects including the Papal Visit to Scotland and England in 2010, Common Worship, and Hymns for Prayer and Praise.
